The Hellboy movies are a strange pair. Released just before the current wave of comic book movie mania, they are usually regarded as pretty great (and definitely 2 of the most fun) comic book movies around that just never quite managed to get the financial success you’d think they would. In fact, when people talk to Del Toro – usually in relation to one of his many current projects (the man is a self confessed workaholic and does like having his finger in many pies) – there will usually be at least one question relating to Mike Mignola’s creation and if we’ll be seeing Ron Perlman’s Hellboy again any time soon.
That’s pretty much exactly what happened when Del Toro was interviewed by latinoreview.com and asked about any updates on Hellboy 3 (and you can read the full, and very interesting interview, here).
Well, a couple of weeks ago or months ago, I did make a couple of phone calls to test, to gage the possibility of doing that because it’s a big movie. There’s no takers for a movie of that size. The two movies made their money back and a little bit. They were financially good, but one was fifty and the other one was eighty, eighty five. This is a hundred and forty. So no one wants to do that leap, from the financial side. So unless we find a way to do the mother of all kick starters
Slightly disappointing news but it is quite optimistic that Del Toro still seems to be quite passionate to bring Hellboy 3 to our screens… he just can’t find anyone to finance it. Maybe a kickstarter campaign is the way to go. And while he’s at it, he should start one to get his adaptation of H. P. Lovecraft’s Mountains of Madness back on track. He’s the perfect choice to give this classic story the proper adaptation it deserves.
Plus, we’re pretty sure Ron Perlman would be up for it. He seems to have a blast making the movies and even recently donned the Hellboy make-up when he met a child through for the Make-A-Wish foundation.
